Lantau Island
Lantau is Hong Kong's largest island - about 147 square kilometres, more than half of it country park, rising to Lantau Peak at 934 metres - and three of the city's headline sights sit within a short ride of one another: the Tian Tan Buddha at Ngong Ping, the stilt-house village of Tai O on the west coast, and Hong Kong Disneyland at Penny's Bay.
Getting there is straightforward: the MTR runs from Central to Tung Chung in about 30 minutes, and from Tung Chung the Ngong Ping 360 cable car covers the last 5.7 kilometres to Ngong Ping in about 25 minutes. The Tian Tan Buddha is 268 steps above the village, with Po Lin Monastery on the plateau below it.
